Of teens and stats

By Yannick Kryk, the 13 May 2009

We already knew that our teens were addicted to web and social media, …. Now we have proof.

Web 2. How much?
We know the internet is used to everything and anything.  News, downloads (legal and / or illegal) and for the last few years, social networks.
For those who have been exiled to the depths of the Mongolian steppes in recent years, I note that a social network is an entity, here a website, that creates the linkages between different individuals within it.

In simplest form, a site which one can meet people for different reasons, so as to create a community.

U.S. phenomenon
The phenomenon of social networks has spread rapidly, with sites like Facebook, Youtube, MySpace, … to name only the most important. A study has just revealed US statistics on the proportion of teens (12-17 years) attending these social networks. Teens using Internet  are about 15.5 million in the U.S.A. And the facts are there, in 2009, 75% of U.S. on-line teens will go on social networks, and in 2013 it would be 80%. The phenomenon is still growing and does not seem ready to stop.

But WTH is he doing on his computer,  locking himself for hours in his room?
This study highlights the use of social networks. 90% use it to keep in touch with their friends. Then “make plans with friends” (70%), make new friends “(50%), and” Flirt “(20%).
Notably, the same question asked to adults gave the same results with almost similar figures. The only difference is the position taken by some more professional reasons, “organize with others for an event or cause (43%),” Make new business or professional contacts “(28%),” Promote myself or my work “(28%)

So?
Of course, these figures come from a study conducted only in the USA, but one can say that the phenomenon is the same in France. Studies show that currently 67% of French people connect daily to the Internet for average of 2:17 a day. In terms of uses,  we found the comparison of products, preparation of travel and most importantly,  the first, to 83%, “Keep in touch with my friends.” The figures show that all things considered, the difference between France and the United States is sufficiently significant to consider that these statistics of evolution are equally valid here. We must therefore expect a exponential growth of social networks, with services becoming more advanced and customized.
The best way to realize the social impact of these networks in real life is that even the humorist began to speak about it, from sketches reserving the phenomenon (Gad Elmaleh, Jérôme Commandeur, ..) to an English comedian who has imagined what Facebook would be in real life.

Connected with these results, it is expected that the position of participatory marketing will become increasingly important in the national advertising campaigns. Indeed, in 2009, the web represents 38% of the media consumption of French, No. 1 going past TV,  35% and radio 17%.
Piece of advice? Be faithful to Participative Spirit to be ready for action.
