Smoking Smarties … Unwanted participatory marketing

By Yannick Kryk, the 13 May 2009

Sometimes consumers own truly a brand… But not in the best way. Smarties is currently experiencing  a particpatory device that may be damaging for his image : children smoking  Smarties!

It was known that sweets could cause tooth decays, but now it may also be added on packages of certain sweets “Smoking kills”! Indeed, kids, teens and addicted to sugary sweets are shown on video broadcasters (youtube,…) describing their experience of smoking Smarties or giving tips to do so.

First, one could find it funny … But it is mainly children who post such content, it’s quickly scary! Because what sort of effects inhaling candy may have on the body? And then it gets really creepy …

A buzz in which the brand would, in my opinion, would have gone without. The most disturbing in the story is that the brand does not seem to deny or do anything to solve this “crisis”.

We tried to contact the Commission of Nestlé France to have a word on the question … no answer.Do not tell me this buzz is actually orchestrates by the brand, please.
